Why does the UK need the (eurofighter) Typhoon?

Would it not have been better to have a multirole fighter/bomber instead of a strict fighter as the typhoon stands now. We need ground attack aircraft now, not dogfighters. Why we got rid of the harrier is beyond me, the f35 wont be ready for years.
