Why are people so attached to Political Parties?

I don't really understand why most people are either attached to Democrats or Republicans to the extend that they see nothing wrong with what their supported party is doing and always criticize the other side even when they are doing something good. Do they care more about their political allegiance more than the well being of people? What am I missing here?
