Why do people *hate* mermaid stories?

Is it because it's cliche? Or overdone? I recently read a mermaid book and I thought it was just wonderful. I thought it would be popular because it was so great. But when I googled the website, only like a hundred people looked at it. Do people think all mermaid stories are really THAT bad? :/
